A whole day to appreciate bats?!?!

Baturday News is a weekly blog written by Rachael, a high school student, bat advocate, and Save Lucy volunteer. Rachael’s interest in bats was sparked by the big brown bats that used the outside of her former home for a winter roost.

Do something nice for bats on April 17!

Hi everyone! I hope you all had a good week! I had an absolutely spectacular one because it was Spring Break! I got to sleep late, watch TV, and go shopping. Best of all, I did not have to go to school or do homework. J

I am very happy to announce that Monday will be National Bat Appreciation Day! I think all the little bats at Save Lucy should get a few extra mealworms to celebrate their special day. To help us humans celebrate, there will be an event called “Backyard Bats Alive!” at Huntley Meadows Park in Alexandria, VA today from 3-4:00. Save Lucy’s very own esteemed leader, Mrs. Sturges, will be there to teach everyone about bats. I will be there too, so I hope to see some of you there!

If you don’t live in the area and are, therefore unable to make it, I hope there is a nice batty event in your hometown. If not, you can still celebrate by just going outside and looking for bats. Or you could do something that would help a bat habitat. You could plant a nice native garden. There are all kinds of ways you can celebrate!

I hope everyone has a very Happy Easter tomorrow and that the Easter Bunny visits and leaves you lots and lots of candy! I wonder if the little bats will get chocolate covered mealworms, or other kinds of chocolate covered bugs. Doesn’t that just sound lovely? Please just eat your Easter candy and don’t try to cover bugs with chocolate at home, kids…I have a feeling it won’t end well…

Happy Easter!
